Monzo does not have a dedicated phone line for bereavement. Notify them via the in-app chat or through the online bereavement page. The support team is available 24/7 via chat.
Monzo will ask you to upload a certified copy of the death certificate. This can be done digitally through their secure document upload feature — no need to post physical copies.
Monzo's team will ask for your own identification and your relationship to the deceased. If you are the executor, provide a copy of the grant of probate when available.
Monzo will freeze the account and stop any scheduled payments. Any remaining pot balances will be consolidated into the main account balance for the estate.
Monzo will transfer the account balance to the bank account you specify for the estate. Monzo accounts are typically simpler to close than traditional banks as there are no branch-based processes to navigate.

Monzo typically takes 2–4 weeks to process a bereavement notification once all required documents have been received.
During this period, accounts or services will typically be frozen until the estate is administered. This means no new transactions can be authorised. Frozen bank accounts cannot send or receive money, so it is important to ensure the estate has an accessible source of funds for ongoing costs such as funeral expenses.
Once Monzo receives your notification and confirms receipt, the account or service will be frozen and no new transactions will be authorised. Estate administration can then begin.
Monzo will write to you with a bereavement reference number and a list of the documents they require to proceed. At that stage you will need to provide the grant of probate (or letters of administration) along with certified copies of the death certificate before funds can be released to the estate.
Do not delay notifying Monzo
Direct debits and standing orders may continue to be charged after death. Some organisations treat the estate as the debtor for any charges incurred before notification. Notifying Monzo promptly protects the estate from unnecessary costs.
