This guide has not been checked against its sources
We re-checked our most-read guides against GOV.UK and the other official sources in September 2026. This one was not among them, so nobody has confirmed its figures, deadlines or process steps since it was written. Treat it as a starting point and confirm anything that matters on GOV.UK before you act on it.
When someone dies, notifying Coventry Building Society is one of the key tasks for the executor or next of kin. This guide explains exactly who to contact, what to say, what documents you will need, and how long Coventry Building Society takes to process a bereavement notification.

Use the online form (it asks for the person's date of birth, date of death, address and basic account details), message the society securely through the NIVO app, which lets you verify your ID and upload documents, or call the bereavement team. After the first notification, the society sends a pack setting out the next steps.
Where sole savings are £50,000 or less, the society asks for the original or a certified copy of the death certificate (or interim death certificate), a completed and signed account closure form, and one form of identification.
Coventry Building Society's probate limit is £50,000: if the person's total savings in sole accounts with the society were more than that at the time of death, you will probably need a grant of representation.
The society says documents sent through NIVO are usually processed within 7–10 days; by post, allow up to 14 extra days. Joint accounts are transferred into the name of the remaining account holder.
Have multiple certified copies of the death certificate ready. Banks and financial institutions each require an original or certified copy — you cannot usually pass a single copy between organisations. See our guide to how many death certificates you need.
Coventry Building Society does not publish a processing time, so we do not give one. Ask when you notify them, and ask for a reference so you can chase it.
Accounts or services are usually frozen until the estate is administered, which means no new transactions can be authorised. Frozen bank accounts cannot send or receive money, so it is important to ensure the estate has an accessible source of funds for ongoing costs such as funeral expenses.
Once Coventry Building Society receives your notification and confirms receipt, the account or service will be frozen and no new transactions will be authorised. Estate administration can then begin.
Coventry Building Society will write to you with a bereavement reference number and a list of the documents they require to proceed. At that stage you will need to provide the grant of probate (or letters of administration) along with certified copies of the death certificate before funds can be released to the estate. Once the grant is in hand, you can proceed to close the deceased's bank account and release funds to the estate.
Do not delay notifying Coventry Building Society
Direct debits and standing orders may continue to be charged after death. Some organisations treat the estate as the debtor for any charges incurred before notification. Notifying Coventry Building Society promptly protects the estate from unnecessary costs.
