This guide has not been checked against its sources
We re-checked our most-read guides against GOV.UK and the other official sources in September 2026. This one was not among them, so nobody has confirmed its figures, deadlines or process steps since it was written. Treat it as a starting point and confirm anything that matters on GOV.UK before you act on it.

Register the death with the register office to get the death certificate.
Phone, email or write to Skipton's bereavement team.
Skipton needs the original or a certified copy of the death certificate or the coroner's interim certificate. Depending on your relationship to the person and the balance, it may also need a grant of probate, letters of administration or a Scottish Certificate of Confirmation.
Up to £5,000, Skipton accepts its Account Closure form without a grant of representation. From £5,000 to £50,000, it needs the Account Closure form with a Statutory Declaration. Above £50,000, a grant of representation is needed.
Have multiple certified copies of the death certificate ready. Banks and financial institutions each require an original or certified copy — you cannot usually pass a single copy between organisations. See our guide to how many death certificates you need.
Skipton Building Society does not publish a processing time, so we do not give one. Ask when you notify them, and ask for a reference so you can chase it.
Accounts or services are usually frozen until the estate is administered, which means no new transactions can be authorised. Frozen bank accounts cannot send or receive money, so it is important to ensure the estate has an accessible source of funds for ongoing costs such as funeral expenses.
Once Skipton Building Society receives your notification and confirms receipt, the account or service will be frozen and no new transactions will be authorised. Estate administration can then begin.
Skipton Building Society will write to you with a bereavement reference number and a list of the documents they require to proceed. At that stage you will need to provide the grant of probate (or letters of administration) along with certified copies of the death certificate before funds can be released to the estate. Once the grant is in hand, you can proceed to close the deceased's bank account and release funds to the estate.
Do not delay notifying Skipton Building Society
Direct debits and standing orders may continue to be charged after death. Some organisations treat the estate as the debtor for any charges incurred before notification. Notifying Skipton Building Society promptly protects the estate from unnecessary costs.
