When someone dies, notifying Bupa is one of the key tasks for the executor or next of kin. This guide explains exactly who to contact, what to say, what documents you will need, and how long Bupa takes to process a bereavement notification.
Bupa bereavement contact details
Phone: 0800 600 500 — Mon–Fri 8am–8pm, Sat 8am–1pm
Online: Bupa contact form
Bupa offers private medical insurance, dental cover, health assessments, and care home services. Call 0800 600 500 to notify them and confirm all products held by the deceased.
Bupa products include: individual or family health insurance, dental plans, travel insurance, care home funding, and health cash plans. Each product has a different bereavement process. Health cash plans have a claims component if the deceased had a recent qualifying health event.
Bupa will cancel the health insurance policy from the date of death. Any premium paid in advance will be refunded pro-rata. If the deceased was in a family policy, you may be able to remove them and continue the family cover.
If the deceased was a resident in a Bupa care home, contact the care home directly as well as Bupa's main line. There may be a period of notice or final payment to be settled.
Have multiple certified copies of the death certificate ready. Banks and financial institutions each require an original or certified copy — you cannot usually pass a single copy between organisations. See our guide to how many death certificates you need.
Bupa typically takes 1–4 weeks to process a bereavement notification once all required documents have been received.
During this period, accounts or services will typically be frozen until the estate is administered. This means no new transactions can be authorised.
Bupa care homes are a separate division from Bupa health insurance. If the deceased was a care home resident, expect a separate billing process and a period of notice to exit the residency agreement.
Once Bupa receives your notification and confirms receipt, the account or service will be frozen and no new transactions will be authorised. Estate administration can then begin.
Bupa will confirm receipt of your notification and advise you of any next steps required to close or transfer the account or policy. Keep a record of all correspondence and reference numbers for the estate file.
Do not delay notifying Bupa
Direct debits and standing orders may continue to be charged after death. Some organisations treat the estate as the debtor for any charges incurred before notification. Notifying Bupa promptly protects the estate from unnecessary costs.
