When someone dies, notifying Amazon is one of the key tasks for the executor or next of kin. This guide explains exactly who to contact, what to say, what documents you will need, and how long Amazon takes to process a bereavement notification.

Amazon's own first suggestion is the simplest one. If you have access to the email address or the phone number on the account, sign in and manage or close it yourself — and use the ‘Forgot password’ link to get in if you need to.
If you cannot sign in, Amazon handles bereavement by email rather than by phone or a web form. Write to bereavement-support@amazon.co.uk. There is no dedicated bereavement phone line.
Amazon says that even without the full set of authorisation documents it can end subscriptions, stop recurring deliveries and deactivate the account. For that it needs only the death certificate and the email address or phone number linked to the account — so a recurring payment such as Prime can be stopped well before probate.
To get account information, close the account or make other changes, Amazon asks for a copy of the death certificate, proof that you are the legal representative of the estate (probate or executor documentation), photographic ID for that person, and the email address or phone number linked to the account.
Amazon can look the account up from another unique identifier — a charge ID or an order number, which you will find on delivery packages, confirmation emails, or the deceased's bank or card statements. Amazon says the documents you send are securely deleted once they have been checked.
Have multiple certified copies of the death certificate ready. Banks and financial institutions each require an original or certified copy — you cannot usually pass a single copy between organisations. See our guide to how many death certificates you need.
Amazon does not publish a processing time, so we do not give one. Ask when you notify them, and ask for a reference so you can chase it.
Accounts or services are usually frozen until the estate is administered, which means no new transactions can be authorised.
Amazon publishes no timescale for bereavement requests, so the figure above is indicative only.
Once Amazon receives your notification and confirms receipt, the account or service will be frozen and no new transactions will be authorised. Estate administration can then begin.
Amazon will confirm receipt of your notification and advise you of any next steps required to close or transfer the account or policy. Keep a record of all correspondence and reference numbers for the estate file.
Do not delay notifying Amazon
Direct debits and standing orders may continue to be charged after death. Some organisations treat the estate as the debtor for any charges incurred before notification. Notifying Amazon promptly protects the estate from unnecessary costs.
