How to Access Funds to Pay for a Funeral
Accessing Estate Funds
Banks and building societies can release funds from the deceased's accounts to pay for funeral expenses before probate is granted. This helps families who can't afford to pay upfront.
Bank Release Process
Most banks will release funds directly to the funeral director upon receiving:
- Death certificate
- Itemized funeral invoice
- Completed bank forms
- ID of the person arranging the funeral
The money is paid directly to the funeral director, not to you personally.
Government Support
Funeral Expenses Payment
Up to £1,000 if you receive certain benefits. Apply through DWP within 6 months.
Bereavement Support Payment
Lump sum payment for surviving spouses/civil partners. Not means-tested.
