PA1P and PA1A forms updated to v4 — old versions being withdrawn

New versions of both probate application forms are being introduced. A single combined form replaces separate professional and citizen versions. Firms should download the latest version immediately.

HMCTS has confirmed that new v4 versions of the PA1P (application with will) and PA1A (application without will) are being introduced shortly, as part of the ongoing modernisation of the MyHMCTS probate service.

The key changes in v4 are: a single combined form replacing the separate professional and citizen versions; more detailed questions designed to reduce incomplete applications and errors; and forms optimised for scanning and uploading, enabling case tracking and status updates through the portal.

HMCTS has announced that older versions up to v2 will be withdrawn and will eventually no longer be accepted. Firms should download the latest version of the forms as soon as they are available and update any precedent documents or template libraries accordingly.

The change follows ongoing feedback from professional user groups that incomplete applications — particularly around asset values, IHT reference codes, and executor details — remain a significant driver of delays and HMCTS requisitions. The more detailed v4 questions are intended to prompt applicants to provide the information needed at first submission rather than in response to a query.

For solicitors, the practical implication is straightforward: stop using any pre-saved or printed versions of the PA1P or PA1A and ensure staff are downloading the current form for each new application. HMCTS has indicated the transition period will be communicated through the MyHMCTS portal and professional user bulletins.
